Science and Education Administration:
former agency of the United States Department of Agriculture, established in 1978 to consolidate activities of the Agricultural Research Service, the Extension Service, the Cooperative State Research Service (CSRS), and the National Agricultural Library. These agencies are now independent units within the Agriculture Department.
Agricultural Research Service personnel work at about 100 domestic and international laboratories to solve animal and plant production problems and conduct research in diet and nutrition. The Extension Service (see Federal Extension Service) provides educational programs in agricultural technology, marketing, and home economics, with special programs to aid low-income families. CSRS administers federal grants for agricultural research conducted at state agriculture experiment stations, land-grant colleges, and other approved institutions. The National Agricultural Library disperses information on botany, zoology, and veterinary medicine to federal agencies, universities, and other interested parties through print media, on-line databases, and compact disks.
